The first thing I get asked when I say I manage HEQ is, “What’s that?”  HEQ stands for Heavy EQuipment but the name only describes the tools, not the functions.  HEQ is comprised of 2 groups: heavy equipment operators and concrete crews.  The first, a small group of men operate a fleet of dump trucks, excavators, and tractors to meet the needs of various other groups on campus. Perhaps their primary and most urgent function is to haul spoils from piping breaks all over campus and then return clean soil to refill those same holes after the breaks are repaired.  In most cases the excavations require removing parts of sidewalks or roadways. The second group of skilled concrete craftsmen replace the concrete in as timely a manner as possible. 

HEQ crews can be seen all over campus repairing potholes and curbs for Transportation Services.  Like other maintenance groups on campus, repair work will be completed over Spring Break or in between semesters.  Take the crosswalk at Sbisa, students may not have noticed that their commute became less hazardous.  HEQ makes it happen with minimal disruption.  While Transportation and UES are our primary customers, many projects are deferred maintenance, repair requests from departments, or concrete features in new landscaping projects.  HEQ is available to assist with whatever needs to be done.
